Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World’s Most Notorious Diaries by Rick Emerson

If you are a Gen-X or millenial reader like myself, you no doubt came across Go Ask Alice somewhere. It was a staple of libraries for decades, it was THE YA book. Alice, an anonymous teen, shares her journey in diary form, into drugs, later hard drugs, sex, and eventually, her death. It was supposed to be a cautionary tale for teens.

Too bad it was all fake– there never was an Alice, just a Mormon woman who took us all for a ride for years.

Beatrice Sparks was a serial hoaxer who would continue to write hoax books about troubled teens for years. This book is funny, well-written and an interesting look at the culture of the times, and how we all got hooked into Alice. Whether you have read Go Ask Alice or not, this true story is a fun, quick ride.
