This is the seventh and final installment in the heartwarming Vanderbeekers series. If you haven’t read any of them, I highly recommend them. The family lives in Harlem with five children, a plethora of animals and lovely friends and neighbors. In this book, they are planning a wedding and one of the children gets seriously ill and the bulk of the storytelling takes place in the hospital. Oh no, a children’s book about cancer, I thought- it’s going to be sappy. It was actually quite heartfelt, touching and realistic. The whole series is wonderful and I’d recommend it for fans of family books like the Penderwicks, which is also one of my favorite series.
